Psychology social anxiety parenting behavioral inhibition fears adolescence Despite fears of social evaluation, specifically fears of negative (FNE) and positive evaluation (FPE), being consistently linked to social anxiety symptoms, no study has tested environmental or individual correlates of these fears. Thus, the current study applied a multi-informant, multi-method design to test whether various parenting behaviors interact with adolescents' behaviorally inhibited temperament in relation to adolescents’ FNE and FPE. A community sample of 107 adolescents (M = 12.39; SD = .98; Girls= 45.8%; European-American= 82.2%) and their mothers completed self-reported measures of parenting behaviors, temperament, and fears of social evaluation, in addition to participating in a novel speech preparation and accomplishment task. A series of path analyses models were conducted with adolescent-report, maternal-report, and observed maternal behaviors separately. Results found that adolescent-reported maternal fears of social evaluation were directly associated with adolescents' FPE, while maternal report of fears of social evaluation were related to adolescents' FNE. Moreover, adolescent-reported maternal messages about positive evaluation were uniquely associated to FPE for adolescents high in behavioral inhibition. Regarding observed maternal behaviors, observed anxious behaviors in the speech task were associated with higher adolescent FNE, though overcontrolling behaviors were linked to less FNE. Collectively, findings from the current study are the first to demonstrate that specific parenting behaviors, particularly expressed fears of social evaluation and messages about positive evaluation, are more directly associated to adolescents' own fears compared to general parenting behaviors. These findings have direct research and clinical implications, such as exploring these pathways prospectively in relation to social anxiety and targeting parenting behaviors that socialize or model fears of social evaluation among at-risk youth. 2021-03-09 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1615232305598037 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1615232305598037 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
