Usingan existential phenomenological approach (Vandermause & Fleming, 2011), sixinterviews (n = 2 males, n = 4 females) were conducted with NCAA DI white Europeaninternational student-athletes from a Midwestern university. Participants were agedbetween 20 and 24 years of age (M = 21.60 years). The sports represented were fieldhockey, swimming & diving, tennis, and track & field. The nationalities represented wereBritish, Dutch, Hungarian & Austrian, Montenegrin, Serbian, and Spanish. Only one ofthe participants had previously tested positive for COVID-19 and all had travelledinternationally since December 2019. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and lasted an average of 43 minutes. Thematic analysis (Vandermause & Fleming, 2011)consisted of two central themes and eight surrounding themes representing the livedexperiences of international student-athletes. Practical recommendations have also beenconstructed related to the role that support staff (e.g., coaches, parents, athleticadministrators, athletic trainers, etc.) and teammates can play in best supportinginternational student-athletes in times of crisis. 2021-07-21 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami162681471330112 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami162681471330112 restricted--full text unavailable until 2022-07-20 This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
