Psychology Misappraisals of unwanted intrusive thoughts are linked to distress and recurrences of these thoughts within cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder. While research has explored the effects of misappraisals on the experience of intrusive thoughts, fewer studies have evaluated mechanisms that underlie these misappraisals. This study evaluated the effects of affect on misappraisals of unwanted intrusive thoughts, and tested whether this effect was moderated by the frequency of thought recurrence. In a between-subjects randomized design, participants were induced to experience either positive or negative affect. Participants interacted with unwanted intrusive thoughts and reported on misappraisals and thought recurrences. There were two hypotheses: 1) individuals in the negative affect condition were expected to report greater misappraisals when compared to individuals in the positive affect condition and 2) the relationship between negative (vs. positive) affect and greater misappraisals was expected to be amplified at higher levels of thought frequency. When examining by affect induction condition, there were no significant effects of affect induction condition, thought frequency, or their interaction. Although the interaction effect was not supported, exploratory tests showed that greater increases in negative affect and thought frequency across conditions predicted greater misappraisals. Study implications, and recommendations for future research are discussed. 2021-09-09 English text Miami University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1630430262223363 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=miami1630430262223363 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
