The Theory of Mind Hypothesis, the Executive Dysfunction Hypothesis, and the Weak Central Coherence Hypothesis will be noted as valuable but incomplete explanations of autism. These hypotheses all highlight the existence of a specific deficit in autism, but these deficits cannot singularly explain the cognition of autism. The Componential Model of Theory of Mind will be discussed as a more comprehensive explanation of autism. The Revised Componential Model will be introduced as a new model that generalizes the Componential Model of Theory of Mind beyond the social realm. This model will emphasize lower-level cognitive components, namely perception and processing. Furthermore, the model will show that lower-level cognitive components have a significant influence on higher-level cognitive components.
