Using a random subset of 30 clients from the Vanderbilt 2 psychotherapy study (Strupp, 1993; Henry, Strupp, Butler, Schacht & Binder, 1993; and Henry, Schacht, Strupp, Butler and Binder, 1993) sample, the current study tested a mediational model in which empathy was predicted to have an influence on outcome indirectly through the alliance and directly, independent of the alliance.
