Counseling Education Counselor Education Ethics Education Counseling CACREP
Counselors are expected to practice by a professional code of ethics and to self monitor professional behavior. This expectation means that the ethical training of counselors becomes a crucial part of a counselor education program. This study examined the varied ways in which counseling students are educated about ethics and how these variations impact how students are able to identify common counseling ethical dilemmas.

The research question addressed in this study was: Is it possible to relate a master’slevel counseling student’s ability to identify ethical dilemmas to type of ethics training, program emphasis area and CACREP accreditation status? The independent variables inthis study included type of ethics training (stand-alone course or an infusion model),emphasis area (clinical mental health counseling/community counseling or school counseling), and enrollment in a CACREP or non-CACREP accredited program. Thedependent variable in this study is ethical knowledge, or the ability to identify ethical dilemmas (Zibert, Engels, Kern and Durodoye, 1998).

One hundred thirty five master’s-level counseling students from across the United States completed a survey including demographic questions and 24 questions comprising a modified version of the Ethical Problem Survey (Zibert et al., 1998). A factorialANOVA was used to address the research questions and results indicated a statistically significant relationship (p = .015) between program CACREP accreditation status and ability to identify ethical dilemmas. In this study, students from CACREP accredited institutions scored significantly higher on the Ethical Problem Survey than students from programs not accredited by CACREP. A discussion of this research, including implications, limitations and directions for future research was presented.
2012-09-11 English text Ohio University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1342732357 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1342732357 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
