These models were developed for the culvert materials and rating scales available at that time and may be considered somewhat outdated in the present days. A new study that includes new pipe manufacturing materials such as High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and new coating materials such as polymeric coating was needed. For this thesis, 214 conduits (96 concrete pipes, 86 steel pipes and 32 HDPE pipes) located in the state of Ohio were inspected and their condition was rated. The condition was rated using the latest rating scales: ODOT rating scale and the Ohio Research Institute for Transportation and the Environment (ORITE) rating scale. During the inspections, drainage water and backfill soil samples were collected and taken to Ohio University for laboratory tests (concentrations of sulfates and chlorides in the drainage water and pH and resistivity of the backfill soil). All the data collected was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, SPSS. Multi-variable regressions using the backward elimination method were performed. Models and charts were developed to estimate the service life of culverts (concrete and steel pipes) in the state of Ohio. The age, the drainage water pH and the abrasion level were the most recurrent parameters among the models obtained to predict the condition of concrete and steel pipes. For HDPE pipes no statistical model was found to predict their durability. HDPE pipes problems were observed to be structural and construction related.Different accelerated degradation test were also conducted on different types of protective coating materials, using a modified Los Angeles abrasion test machine. Aluminized, bituminous coated and polymeric coated steel specimens were tested and their resistance to degradation was compared. All three coating types add resistance to abrasive actions of water-aggregate mixture, with the polymeric coating providing the best protection, the bituminous coating the second best, and the aluminized coating the third best. 2016-09-19 English text Ohio University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1470833987 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ohiou1470833987 restricted--full text unavailable until 2022-09-01 This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
