It catalyzes the oxidative demethylation of trimethylamine to dimethylamine and formaldehyde. Initial work focused on developement of a recombinant expresion system for TMADH. With the development of this system, work has focused on a variety of residues in the active site of the enzyme. In collberation with Dr R Silverman, we have investigated the source of oxygen in 6-OHFMN formation, rendering the protein inactive. We have shown that Tyr-60 is not acting as an active site base in TMADH.
