We start by deriving an optimal basis of low resolution empirical spectral energy distribution (SED) templates for galaxies from 0.2 to 10 μm using observations of the NOAO Deep-Wide Field Survey (NDWFS) Boötes field. We use these templates to estimate photometric redshifts and K-corrections and to study the luminosity function of galaxies as a function of galaxy type and its evolution with redshift.

We then extend the set of SED templates to also include AGNs. Thewavelength range of these templates is expanded to 0.03-30 μmrange by adding GALEX FUV and NUV, and MIPS 24μm observations ofthe NDWFS Boötes field. We use these templates to estimatephotometric redshifts for AGNs and to study biases in mid-IR AGN color selection techniques. We also predict the color distribution ofobjects in the WISE mission and design an AGN color selection criterionfor it.

We also present a study of the J-band luminosity function of AGNsfrom redshift 0 to 6. Our sample is composed of a combination ofmid-IR and X-ray selected objects, which avoids the typical biases ofoptically selected samples. We model the luminosity function by adouble power-law and find that its evolution cannot be described byeither pure luminosity or pure density evolution, but must be acombination of both.

Finally, we present a study of possible biases in AGN black hole (BH)mass estimates based on the CIV, Hα and Hβ broademission lines using a sample of high redshift lensed quasars from the CASTLES project with observed-frame ultraviolet and near-infraredspectra. We find that that the residuals between CIV and Balmer linemass estimates are strongly correlated with the ratio of the UV andoptical continuum luminosities, and that removing this dependencyreduces the scatter between the UV and optical based BH mass estimates by a factor of approximately 2.
2010-10-07 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1281369360 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1281369360 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
