Conflict negotiation refers to the process of working out different opinions or interests.

The main interest of the studies on conflict negotiation in Japanese has been on individual strategies. This study analyzes conflict negotiation as a process that has different phases in its proceedings. The ultimate goal of the study is to apply its findings to Japanese as a foreign language pedagogy. For the learners, knowing how to negotiate conflict appropriately gives them the control over how they project themselves in the target language.

The data was collected from two Japanese television dramas and a movie and analyzed using the notion of performance (Walker and Noda 2000). The categorization of strategies identified by Jones (1990) served as the basis for identifying the strategies used. Using the notion of performance made it possible to capture conflict negotaiton as an activity with a beginning and an end. Sixty-two performances of conflict negotiation were analyzed. Participant roles, the social and ethical appropriateness of expressing conflict, and the accessibility to the topic under discussion seem to influence the ways in which the participants in an interaction start a performance of conflict negotiation.

More than half of the examples analyzed in this study do not reach resolution. The participants terminate the performance of conflict negotiation by leaving the setting or by shifting the topic. Audience may also contribute to ending the conflict negotiation by intervening or just by being at the scene of the negotiation. In situations involving person with social power who does not show interest in taking part in the negotiation, the participants try to involve them into the negotiation process. When the attempts are ignored, the participants defend and then submit to power with the hope to obtain what they want.

Role-plays are suggested as the way to incorporate the findings to classrooms. The ability to react as an average native speaker is pointed out as a qualification of instructors in advanced levels.
2001 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1392305866 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1392305866 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
