The effect of tube-pruning diameters on root regeneration and vegetative growth was studied on field grown Juniperus horizontalis 'Plumosa'. Plants were root pruned in April, or at monthly intervals through October and harvested periodically throughout the year. The studies determined optimal times for root pruning and provided information on tolerance of plants for summer and fall root pruning. All species studied increased in root weight with April, May and June root prunings. Root pruning during July resulted in vigorous root regeneration and regrowth, but produced root weights significantly lower than earlier treatments. Root pruning during August, September, and October did not stimulate vigorous root regeneration when harvested in fall or winter. However, harvesting in spring following the late summer and early fall root treatments stimulated increased root weight in Cornus florida, increased root initiation in Taxus cuspidata 'Thayerae', but had no effect on Juniperus horizontalis 'Plumosa'.The effect of root pruning on vegetative growth was variable among the species studied. Shoot extension was not affected in Cornus florida by root pruning treatments. In Juniperus, root pruning in April through July caused reduced foliage spread while August and September treatments did not affect vegetative growth. Taxus shoot growth was unpredictable, but generally tended to be reduced with earlier treatments while later treatments resulted in greater shoot extension. One Juniperus study involved tube-pruning in April with tubes of 17.8, 20.3, 22.9, and 25.4 cm diameters. Fibrous root weight was significantly highest with the 20.3 cm diameter tube-pruning. The 17.8, 22.9, and 25.4 cm diameter tubes resulted in fibrous root weights which were statistically equal, but greater than controls. Foliage spread was significantly reduced by tube-pruning. Foliage spread was least with the smallest diameter tube, and increased proportionately as tube diameters increased. 1983 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1406813892 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1406813892 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
