While several researchers have presented results for the case of periodic potential, and sudden change in potential, their model are based on the Boltzmann distribution or the Debye-Huckel approximation and neglected the convective terms in the mass flux equa¬tion. There has been no systematic study on the effect of the variation of wall potential on the flow structure either. In this thesis the distributions of potential, velocity and mole fractions are calculated numerically and the flow within the “nanovortex” resembles that of the classical Lamb vortex. The parameters that affect the circulation are investigated as well. The affect of the convective terms is discussed and the long electrode limit (the aspect ratio A << 1) is investigated for small (EDLs overlapped) and large (thin EDL) channels as well.A model is set up for the micro-device fabricated by Hansford. The numerical results compare well with the experimental data for the base case. The electroosmotic flow in annular channels is investigated as well. 2005 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1418836759 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1418836759 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
