Six adopted adults were interviewed and the interviews were tape recorded and transcribed. A constant comparative analysis was used to find emergent themes in the text. Specifically, stories were examined with a focus on how the adoptee and adoptive parents manage the dialectical tension of expressiveness and protectiveness in their relationships. The dialectical management patterns used during the analysis were selection, separation, neutralization, and reformulation. A dialectical management pattern was selected for each emergent theme with a discussion for how the adoptive family members manage the dialectic of expressiveness and protectiveness.
