Specifically, the research objective is to understand the discursive structuration of race and racial identity within this suburban department. The members of this organization reside in predominately middle to upper class suburbs of the city, are all white, and almost exclusively male. The purpose of choosing this particular subculture for analysis is two-fold: (1) I have spent a considerable amount of time as an “inside member” of this organization and am familiar with their general worldview, and (2) I cannot justifiably attempt to understanding other groups without deconstructing the “sensemaking” of my own. This project’s aim is to understand the often “unarticulated” role of “whiteness” in racial discourse from the perspective of an “inside member” of this particular group. 2005-09-30 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1123680751 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1123680751 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
