There have been several researches in past that have tried to understand this abstract relationship. Jane Jacobs was the person who has indirectly inferred the relationship of physical layout and crime. Later Oscar Newman introduced his new idea of Defensible space and contradicted Jane Jacob’s concept. The thesis focuses on new concept of Space Syntax developed by Bill Hiller and his colleagues at University College London. According to the theory of space syntax built form affect the movement of people in the space and thus regulates various social functions. Based on the theory, a good spatial layout generates automatic movement which increases the probability of interactions by unplanned encounters and reduces the crime rate. The thesis has used the Space Syntax technique to analyze and quantify the urban system in terms of how well it is connected and integrated. Methodology includes the correlation and the regression analysis with the crime rate as dependent variable and the social and spatial factors as independent variables. The findings showed that good connectivity and integration reduces the crime. The effect of the social factors in explaining the spatial variation in crime was three times then the spatial factors. However, it may be premature on the basis of this analysis to suggest a casual relationship between the crime and the street layout due to small sample size. But the study has opened the door for variety of studies that can investigate the effect of spatial factors on the distribution of crime. 2006 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1163717302 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1163717302 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
