It is necessary to understand how the variation of interfacial properties affects the overall behavior of the composite. In this work, the interface of a uniaxially reinforced composite representative volume element (RVE) is modeled using the cohesive zone modeling (CZM) approach. A three parameter bilinear traction separation relationship is used to characterize the interface and the effect of variation of these parameters on the response of the composite is studied. Uniaxial tension and compression tests are simulated using a finite element model to study the response of the composite with varying constituent properties. The matrix is modeled as a linearly elastic material initially and as a hyperelastic material subsequently. The importance of each interfacial parameter on the effective behavior of the composite is investigated. Failure at the interface and its effect on the response of the composite is studied, and the load sharing within the composite when external load is applied is observed. 2008 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1206453509 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1206453509 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
