Utilizing the researcher-developed OECS, 160 orchestras were solicited representing a cross-section of budget, city-type and location. This qualitative document with minimal commentary reports the responses of the 66 orchestras that participated in the OECS.

Major topics include the creation of an education concert, the creation of teacher and student preparatory materials, the presentation of an education concert and the evaluation of an education concert.

The OECS found that most orchestras create education concerts for grades 3-6. These concerts are often designed around several musical concepts and incorporate national and state curriculum standards. Furthermore, many orchestras create teacher and student preparatory materials to increase the level of student preparation and comprehension.

According to responses to the OECS today's education concerts often include: Visual aids, brief musical excerpts, student participation, non-classical music, recent technology and non-orchestral fine arts. Overall, five-year comparison questions show a general increase in the level of student comprehension, attendance and budget.

For the benefit of conductor and director of education, a list of musical selections used by American orchestras for education concerts during the 2007-2008 season can be found in appendix 3.
2008-08-27 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1211989035 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1211989035 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
