Health Education Health Literacy Medication Literacy The purpose of this study is to assess in a low health literate population whether instruction wording, implicit versus explicit dosage frequencies, is associated with participants' ability to describe and properly demonstrate dosing of a commonly prescribed liquid pediatric medication. Additionally, this study will determine if there are differences in ability to dose between sexes, race & ethnicity and the number of children in the home.A sample of 248 individuals was recruited from an urban social services agency from October, 30, 2012 and February, 1 2013. A 10 question oral survey was administered, which included sociodemographic items and basic health literacy information. Participants were given one of two types of pediatric liquid medication bottles with different instruction language and asked to articulate the dosing procedure, demonstrate their dosing interpretation of the instructions, and cite preference of instruction wording (implicit versus explicit). Descriptive statistics and Pearson Chi-Square were used to analyze the data. Overall, there were significant correlations in participants' ability to describe medication instructions based on all examined factors (race, gender, children in the household, and explicit versus implicit dosing instructions), whereas the ability to dose properly was only significant for gender and children present in the household. An overwhelming majority of individuals preferred explicit dosing instructions. Recommendations have been included for future studies. 2013-10-21 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1378112300 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1378112300 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
