CFTs are categorized as compact, noncompact and slender sections. The objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of the load transfer equations provided in AISC 360-16 for slender CFTs when the load is applied on steel. This study involves obtaining the required information, developing the finite element models of CFTs, validating the models and modeling the load transfer between steel and concrete. Previous experimental studies are reviewed and the finite element models are developed and validated by benchmarking with the experiments. The load transfer between steel and concrete is modeled using the cohesive bond behavior. From this investigation, it can be concluded that the load transfer between steel and concrete cannot be modeled accurately due to the lack of experimental data for the bond strength and plastic behavior of the bond between steel and concrete. Experimental tests to find the cohesive bond parameters in the model should be conducted and those parameters should be used to model the load transfer between steel and concrete. The CFT models with accurate load transfer behavior can then be used to evaluate the accuracy of the load transfer equations when the load is applied on steel for slender filled composite members provided in AISC 360-16. 2017 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin151179557053975 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin151179557053975 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
