Health Education adolescent sexual health sex education adolescent sexual behavior Adolescents account for an estimated 50% of new sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases each year despite making up only 20% of the sexually active population. Further, Ohio adolescents have been shown to have some of the highest rates of common STIs in the country. Comprehensive sex education has been recognized as an effective tool for improving adolescent sexual health outcomes. However, Ohio state policy still requires an abstinence-based curriculum in schools despite evidence against such curriculum. In this secondary data analyses, we examine data from the 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Survey to accomplish two aims: (1) describe the sexual behaviors of high school students in Ohio while stratifying these behaviors by sex and grade (behaviors include ever had intercourse, condom use, birth control use, forced or coerced sexual behaviors and use of alcohol or drugs prior to last intercourse), and (2) examine the association of drug or alcohol use prior to intercourse with a) forced or coerced sexual behaviors and b) condom use while controlling for sex and grade level. Descriptive statistics were utilized for the first aim, and multiple regression and chi-square analysis were used for aim two. Participants’ sex and alcohol or drug use prior to last intercourse were found to be predictors of students having experienced forced sexual behavior. Females were found to be more likely to have experienced forced sexual encounters with sex accounting for 93% of the model’s effect (11.4% of females and 5.2% of males in our sample had experienced forced sex), while alcohol or drug use prior to last intercourse accounted for 54% of the model’s effect. The chi-square analysis showed a statistically significant association with alcohol or drug use at last intercourse and condom use at last intercourse with substance use having a negative impact on condom use. Our study indicates a need for improved sex education standards to better suit the needs of Ohio high school students and improve sexual health outcomes, including a reduction in STIs, among this population. Curriculum should include information on condom use and avoiding sexual coercion and be tailored to suit the behavioral needs of modern adolescents. 2019-10-21 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1560866752557457 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1560866752557457 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
