Additionally, the purpose of this study was to compare primipara women’s and multipara women’s perception of the nurse’s supportive techniques and birth satisfaction. Lastly, the purpose of this study was to examine the influence past childbirth experience, if any, has on their most recent birth experience. This study tested the following hypotheses:1.There is a significant increase in laboring women’s satisfaction with their most recent birth as their perception of nursing support increases. 2. There is a significant difference in perception of nursing support with most recent birth experience based on parity of the mother. 3. There is a significant difference in satisfaction with most recent birth experience based on parity of the mother. 4. The relationship between perception of nursing support and satisfaction with most recent birth experience will differ based on parity of the mother. A convenience sample of postpartum mothers was used and participants completed a modified survey to collect data. Criteria for participation in the study was women who delivered a viable fetus at least two weeks prior, but within the past twelve months of taking the survey. Additionally, the participants had to be able to read English and gave birth in a United States hospital with a nurse present during their labor and delivery. Women who had a scheduled cesarean section were excluded from the study as the questions asked in the survey did not relate to their birth experience. The sample size was 44 participants. The modified survey included 47-52 questions, depending on the parity of the participant. The survey began by asking demographic questions. Three variable were measured by the survey: birth satisfaction, nursing support, and parity. The Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R) was used to measure the variable birth satisfaction. The BSS-R has been recommended as the instrument of choice for global use to assess maternal birth experience (Martin & Martin, 2014). The Bryanton Adaptation of the Nursing Support in Labor Questionnaire (BANSLQ) was used to measure perception of nursing support. The BANSLQ has a reported alpha reliability of 0.93 and content validity (Bryanton et al., 1994). The variable parity was measured by asking questions about any previous birth experience and previous birth satisfaction. The study found a significant positive relationship between the variables perception of nursing support and birth satisfaction. As positive perception of nursing support increased, birth satisfaction also increased. The study also found a significant difference in birth satisfaction based on parity and past birth experience. Multipara participant’s had a higher mean score of birth satisfaction for their most recent delivery than primipara participants. 2019-04-30 English text Walsh University Honors Theses / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=walshhonors1555685126717134 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=walshhonors1555685126717134 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
