Psychology Childhood Maltreatment Parenting Attitudes Home Visitation Trauma Parenting Beliefs Mothers The objectives of this study were to examine the parenting attitudes of mothers who experienced maltreatment during childhood, and who participated in a home visitation program. Participants consisted of 203 first-time, at-risk mothers that were receiving home visitation to support the healthy development of their infant and whose self-reported history of maltreatment was either none to low or moderate to severe. Mothers completed a questionnaire regarding their current parenting attitudes at enrollment in the home visitation program, 9-months, and 18-months. There were no statistically significant differences in parenting attitudes between mothers who experienced moderate to severe childhood maltreatment and those who experienced none to low childhood maltreatment. Mothers’ scores on the attitude measure were categorized as typical of the general population. There was a significant main effect for time on a repeated measures ANOVA for all five parenting attitudes subscales, although the score improvements in parenting attitudes were small and did not alter the interpretive category of the score. After controlling for the number of home visits mothers received, significant improvement over time remained for only two of the five subscales. These findings suggest that home visitation may be effective in improving parenting attitudes. Future research may focus on the impact of specific types of maltreatment on parenting attitudes and the use of a control group to determine the effectiveness of home visitation on parenting attitudes. 2016 English text Xavier University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1441541302 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1441541302 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
