The first chapter focuses on Lavinia's early training in early modern Bologna, her artistic influences, and her career successes. The second chapter situates Fontana in early modern Bologna and discusses the city's tradition of a female artistic community and the practice of collecting drawings. The third chapter focuses on the two main caches of Fontana's drawings: an album in New York at the Pierpont Morgan Library and a collection of drawings in Florence at the Uffizi Gallery. This section presents a formal analysis of the drawings' qualities, their function in Fontana's design process, and their desirability to early modern collectors. The final chapter discusses Fontana's patrons and introduces concepts of drawing theory in relation to Fontana's red and black chalk portrait drawings.
