The reasons of failure for earth dam include many causes. Overtopping is a major cause of an earth dam failure and it can result from flood, earthquake, strong wind, etc. The present study concentrates on the flood, earthquake, strong wind results in water stage which overtops for calculating the value of risk. Never-theless, the methodology presented in this study can be applied to other contributing factor in the calculation of total risk of a earth dam failure results from overtopping.   In this study, the overtopping risk due to the occurrence of flood, earthquake, strong wind is calculated by the Mean-Value First-Order Second-Moment method (MFOSM) and Advanced First-Order Second-Moment method (AFOSM), and by poisson distribution to find the value of risk in various using period for shinmen dam. According to the calculation result, it shows that MFOSM method and AFOSM method in calculating the value of risk is reasonable. This study shows that the difference betrween the MFOSM method and AFOSM method. The risk of overtopping for each specific duration on shihneb is increasing obviousily in the foregoing period and after reaching peak, it is decreasing deviously. The causes of the cases are due to the result of the storage of shihmen reservoir and the peak decreasing in reservoir this makes the reservoir to release water safety for long-duration. 邱金火 1990 學位論文 ; thesis 97 zh-TW
