The IEEE Second Benchmark Model, system-1 is employed to investigate the benefits of the utiliza- tion of modulated generator active power, by injecting a quadrature phase voltage in the system, in suppressing unstable SSR modal interactions. In order to damp all the torsional modes in different operating conditions, a unified approach based on modal control theory is used for the design of a phase-shifter controller. For demonstrating the effectiveness of the damping en- hanced by the proposed scheme, eigenvalue analysis for different operating conditions and sensitivity analysis for controller parameters are performed. In addition, dynamic responses of the nonlinear system under disturb- ance conditions are also carried out. It can be conclud- ed from the simulation results that the proposed phase- shifter control scheme can effectively suppress the tor- sional oscillations.
