To prevent further injury of the knee joint, an exterior artificial joint such as a knee brace is needed to assist the knee's action during the therapy of rehabilitation. By kinematic data, the study aims to design an exterior artificial knee joint suitable to the oriental as well as to serve as a tool in clinical diagnosis, estimation of the knee joint diseases, and improvement the surgical treatment, etc. Except refering to former study on knee kinematics during level walking for the knee brace design, twelve normal male subjects were asked to perform three kinds of activities including upstairs and downstairs. The kinematic data were collected at least six times for each activity. We calculated the paramenters of the screw axis, the angles of the relative motion, and the of the motion of the medial and lateral epicondyles of the femur from the position of reflective markers. Because of the larger range of motion on the sagittal plane for stand-squat activity, thus, the motion patterns of the knee are adopted for the design of the knee The result showed that when the knee is flexed, the relative backward and downward motion of the lateral epicondyle is larger than that of the medial epicondyle. When the tibia is flexed toward the femur, it rotates internally and varusly to the femur, and vice versa. Moreover, the direction of the knee screw axis changes abruptly at the transition of extension and flexion. And the angle of rotation of the screw is proportional to the angular velocity of the knee flexion. As a matter of fact, we use cam-slot and pin-slot mechanism to design knee brace for the protection of the knee ligament.
