bicycle industry by questionnaires and depth interview. By
examining variables related to product strategy, new product
development organization and new product performance, this
research tries to explain its competitive ability, also offers
some suggestions for improvement. From the research, it is
known that: 1. Though bicycle industry is classified as
traditional industry, technical ability is the most important
factor in product strategy. 2. From the prospective of
product strategy adapted, the whole structure of Taiwan''s
bicycle industry can be described as a mature industry.
A mature industry is dominated by a few giant firms
surrounded by a mulititude of niching firms. 3. Product
strategy variables is more important than product development
organization variables in affecting product performance
variables. 4. Strategy variables affect both business and
technical performance varibles. Product deveolpment
organization variables only affect technical performance
variables. 5. Product strategy variables have close
relationship with product development organization
variables. That is, product development organization
should follow product strategy. 6. Taiwan''s bicycle
industry use the fifth generation new product development
model, strategic integration and networking model, to
develop new product. This networking model is also the
competitive advantage of local bicycle industry. Above all,
Taiwan''s bicycle industry should start to accumlate the
ability to understand enduser and collect market information.
By combining marketing and technical ability, local bicycle
industry can form an "dual-drive" new product development and
create a bright future.
