Multimedia traffic demands stringent performance: low cell loss and bounded delay. In order for the network to meet these demands, it has to impose performance bounds on individual nodes. In this thesis, a cell scheduling mechanism called multiple delay classes/ priority scheduling, is applied to each ATM node.The scheduling mechanism can satisfy diverse delay performance requirements of multimedia traffic. Besides, an estimation method has been proposed to calculate cell loss ratios of connections in the scheduling mechanism. The method is suitable for real time implementation, since the amount of calculation for cell loss ratio estimation is reduced by using recursive equations.
