However, the seedling transportation mainly relies on carts, conveyors and laborers, its demand for the great deal of manpower results in the need for an automation. The automatic basket fitting system proposed in this study plays an important role in the integration of transport and seeding systems, and makes the automation of the entire transportation system possible. In this study, the layout of this system includes two perpendicular operation lines. One operation line connects to seeding system, from which the plug tray is supported by grasper arms and carried forward to the basket fitting area. The other operation line consists of four units, the baskets can be singulated and discharged by basket destacking unit, and finally be moved to the basket fitting area where the automatic basket fitting operation is done. The multi- purpose baskets were also designed in this study. The control algorithm of this system is executed by a programmable logic controller (PLC), it also allows the reversed movement, which can be used to stack the baskets with seedlings collected from greenhouse, and finally a folk lift is used to load baskets onto a truck. The working capacity for basket destacker, stacker and fitter are 320, 343 and 320 baskets per hour respectively. The averaged fitting accuracy are 97.5% and 98.3% for vegetable and watermelon plug trays. The success rate of fitting is 100%. The statistical analysis indicates that the fitting speed and plug medium weight have no significant influence onthe fitting accuracy at significance level of 5%.
