The purpose this study is to investigate the shear strength properties and engineering properties of Taipei silty clay using in-situ pressuremeter test. Besides, an automatic Ko-consolidation test was established. The Ko test results are used to verify the self-boring pressuremeter test. The results of pressuremeter test indicate that the ratio of undrained shear strength to effective tical stress for the normally consolidated Taipei silty clay is 0.7. The normalized undrained shear strength from laboratory test is about 0.35-0.40. The pressuremeter test obviously obtain the higher undrained shear strength than the laboratory test. The ef- fects fo testing disturbance and partially drained may be the of error for the pressuremeter test. These factors should be into account in the determination of undrained shear strength. undrained deformation modulus is also affected by the soil bance during test. The dusturbance should be avoided as best as possible.
