Among various compression techniques, however, a standard image compression method isneeded to enable interoperability of equipment from different manufacturers as well as satisfing most image applications. In this thesis, an international still image compression standard, known as JPEG, is studied and its baseline codec system operating based on 8x8 DCT block is implementated in detail. Additionally, because the fairly long time in coding images using JPEG standard, we adopt Cho's fast DCT algorithm andpropose a simple, effective quantization techniques to implementthe JPEG baseline codec thus to increase its time efficiency. the other hand, dedicated effort on putting these algorithms into a digital signal processor 'DSP96002' is also paid to realize the codec in hardware. Hereafter, the performance of this coding system is also evaluated and the result show that the great improvement has been achieved and the designed performance of realistic hardware is obtained, too.
