The prepared mono- disperse polystyrene particles with diameters in the range of 1-5 mm were used as the seeds in the second step of polymeri- zation. These particles were swellen in the solution of methacrylate as the monomer, ethylene dimethacrylate as the crosslinking agent and toluene as the solvent diluent. After swelling,these particles were polymerized, then were extracted with solvent in a Soxhlet apparatus to remove diluent and linear polystyrene. Monodisperse porous copolymer particles of BMA-co-EDMA and MMA-co-EDMA copolymer particles were obtained. From the exprimental datas, the following results were obtained that the specific surface area and pore volume of the MMA-co- EDMA particles are higher than those of BMA-co-EDMA particles after extraction by toluene at the same reaction condictions . The influence of diluent, toluene, the specific surface area and pore volume of the copolymer particles was investigated. When the concentraction of the porogenic solvent toluene was 4.0 - 4.5 vol% in the organic phase, the specific surface area and pore volume was higher for the copolymer particles obtained.
