Summary: | 碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 化學工程研究所 === 82 === Oxygen supply is usually a limiting step in aerobic bio-
reaction system. To overcome this drawback, hydrocarbons are
added to a fermentatinon medium to increase the oxygen transfer
rate. In this study, the fermentation of Penicillium chysogenum
was employed to investigate the effect of addition of n-hexade-
cane on the mold growth and the production of penicillin.
Experimental results showed that the timing of adding n-
hexadecane to the fermentation medium would effect cell mor-
phology and penicillin productivity. Adding n-hexadecane at
growth phase, the mold would exist as filamentous mycelium (not
pellet) and the penicillin productivity was low. Adding n-
hexadecane at the production phase, the biomass existed as
fluffy loose pellets and high penicillin productivity could be
obtained. We also found that n-hexadecane had a good effect of
anti- foaming. Employing n-hexadecane as the antifoam agent
resulted in higher production rate of penicillin than using
KM-70.
