The nineteenth century is a century of the discovery of foreign beauty; a century of the rebirth of Gothe. It is a century of which the philosophy of hieroglyphic, gloomy, and romanticism are in fashion. It is in this century, the conseption of nationalism in the field of music, art, and literature began to emerge. More or less, the brainchild of this century is coated with the color of nationalism. In this dissertation, the meaning of romanticism, the uniquety of its literature, and the characteristics of the nineteenth century, and music of romanticism are restated first. Secondly, the reason why nationalism has emerged in this century and how it relates to its music are analized. Then, a comparison of Russian historical background and its music is made follows by the contrast of the western-diverged romanticism with nationalism in music, art, and literature and its seperation with aesthetic philosophy. Lastly, an analization based on the great composer, Tchaikovsky, of his conception of creation is made through the information on his life, and a great number of letters and diaries founded etc. Also a research of Tchaikovsky''s musical style is done through an analization of his pieces, they are the best examples of combining and blending western romanticism and Russian nationalism. In presenting his pieces based on foreign topics, Tchaikovsky also expressed them entirely based on his Russian cast. His Romeo, Juliet, Francesca, and Manfred all presented their Russian way of passionate, longing, and affliction. Based on this explaination, there are not much difference between Francesca and Onegin. On the other hand, a country becomes a part of the outer world, it is a fact, but also a limit. Tchaikovsky''s music is parted from this outer fact, it is abstract. Tchaikovsky is a great and cosmopolitan Russian in the european music progression of the century.
