The objective of this thesis is to develop the computer-aided fixture design system for modular fixture setup, and the fixture analysis system for verification of fixture design. The computer- aided fixture design system are implemented on a commercial CAD/CAM system, namely, CATIA. The determination algorithms are derived for locating position of modular fixture elements on a base plate. A 3-D library containing the solid models of modular fixture elements are created. After applying the determination algorithms, a workpiece setup with surrounded fixture elements is displayed on the terminal. The fixture analysis system use finite element analysis to analyze the dynamic behavior of the fixtured workpiece. An optimization model, which is formulated to determinate the deformation of a workpiece and the appropriate clamping forces, is constructed to find the optimal fixture design among several feasible setups. This research focuses on both planning and analysis in workpiece fixturing. A scientific approach is taken to make fixture design more efficiently and effectively than the traditional approach of relying on tool designer's expertise. Amy J. C.
