Traditional transport protocols like TCP and TP4 can not provide sufficient services to support multimedia communications. In this thesis, a multimedia transport protocol EXTP (Enhanced XTP) is proposed based on the XTP high speed transport protocol. The multimedia transport protocol incorporates many concepts and mechanisms, such as QoS management, RTP-like services and Partial Retransmission to provide flexible and suitable services for multimedia applications. We describe the design issues for EXTP and implement EXTP in UNIX STREAM environment. We expect that the new design for XTP will provide a good environment for those kind of applications, especially for the new generation of multimedia applications.
