The research framework is based on the theory of mainstream industrial organization school. Based on the theoretical ground and statistical techniques, the thesis studies the characteristics of the structure, conduct, and performance variables within Taiwan Food Industry. The relevant structural variables are entry barriers, import and export density, CR4, cost structure, risk, market growth, growth rate of produced value, and relative scale within industry; the conduct variables include density of promotion, density of R&D, diversification, technique purchased from foreign countries, and investment on fixed assets; while the performance variables considered are profit rate and productivity. The model of performance equation (profit and productivity) is estimated using 4-digit standard industrial classification industry data from the Republic of China for 1988-1991. The empirical results show that the magnitude of marginal impact of promotion density variable in the profit rate function is the largest, while the magnitude of marginal impact of density of R&D in the productivity function is the largest variable.
