Description
Summary:碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 英國語文學研究所 === 83 === This thesis deals with three father characters in Jane Austen's novels: Mr. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, Sir Thomas in Mansfield Park, and Mr. Woodhouse in Emma. The thesis begins with an introduction on Austen's writing history, criticism on her work, and the method of approaching the topic of the thesis. After the introductory chapter, each father is discussed in individual chapters, in which a brief account of criticism on them will be presented, followed by a close analysis of the dialogues they have with other characters. The study of their dialogues will be assisted and supported by Austen's narration of their characteristics. Afterwards, the function of the fathers in the novel will be analyzed as well. Then a comparison on the fathers' pair characters, if they have one, will follow. Finally, Austen's attitude towards the three father characters will be discussed also. In the consluding chapter, the focus will be on the differences and similarities among the three fathers. Afterwards, an overall presentation of Austen's views towards each father character will be presented.
