It is understood that the best part of this novel is found in the description of the female figures, especially Wang Hsi-Feng, Lin Tai-Yu, and Hsueh Pao-Chai, whose character and role are tactfully characterized by what they wear. The content of this dissertation is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is introduction. The second chapter analyzes the background of the female characters' costume. The discussion covers the Tsaos' being assigned to the post of the Chiangning Textile Manufactory, the effects of the Ching Dynasty's regulations on women's costume, and women's social position. In the third chapter, women's costume, including styles, accessories, materials, and colours, is discussed. S tyles are analyzed and compared under consideration of the historical setting. The forth chapter focuses on analysis of Wang Hsi-Feng, Lin Tai-Yu, and Hsueh Pao-Chai as characterized by what they wear and as compared with other figures. Finally, the fifth chapter is to conclude the writer's research. Tsao Hsueh-Chin's association with the post of the Chiangning Textile Manufactory makes him familiar with the royal fashion and influenced significantly by the Ching Dynasty's regulations on costume. In addition, the setting of the story in the Ching Dynasty allows him to differentiate the costume of women of the upper and lower classes. For Tsao, who is very good at using a figure of speech, costume provides him with a good means to characterize and symbolize figures. His successful characterization enables the reader to understand his personages from their costume. Wang Yu Ching;Hu Tse Min 王宇清;胡澤民 1995 學位論文 ; thesis 165 zh-TW
