Through thenderstanding of the relation between the swirl combustion modesnd the NOx emission,it is attempted to propose a suitableperation scheme to reduce the NOx and other emission. Two characteristics swirl combustion modes were identified.elocity measurements showed that the shear layer between thedge of the swirling recirculation zone and the external flowield is a highly turbulent and rapid mixing region. The maximumean temperature is also located at the edge of the recirculationone indicating violent combustion in this region. The NOxmission levels decrease as the momentum ratio decreases and thetrongly recirculating flame has the lowest emission level.xcess cold air entrained by the swirling flow may quench theombustion and the hot products resulting in increase of the NO2ontent and high CO emission. However, it could be improved bysing the annular type injector with lateral fuel injectionattern to increase fuel-air premixing to reduce NOx formation inhe flame with no appreciable increase in CO emission.
