The of this study is to explore the impacts of sludge retension time and Anaerobic zone volume / aerobic zone volume ratio (Van:Va) to the efficiency of sludge settling and to compare kinetic and metabolic selection in the mechanism of bulking control with anaerobic selectors.The results of Plug flow experiment show that as Van:Va increase, the efficiency of sludge settling increase. Whention is processing in anaerobic selectors, released phosphorus concentration(RPC) in the anaerobic zone is a main factor to the efficiency of sludge settling. The higher the RPC, the higher the efficiency at the same SRT. The closer the RPC to the saturated released phosphorus concentration( SRPC) of the fixed SRT, the higher the efficiency for different SRTs. In the experiment with different SRTs, the highest RPC is obtained when SRT=10 days,the next is obtained when SRT=15 days, and then the smallest one is obtained when SRT=5 days. When compared with the same Van:Va, RPC is closer to SRPC when SRT=15 days. AS such, for SRT=15 days, the efficiency of sludge settling is good, even Van:Va is small(1:9). In completely mixed reactor experiment, For kinetic selection, when there is higher MLSS concentration and less substrate concentration gradient,the effect of kinetic selection to the efficiency of sludge settling is less. Futhermore, MLSS increases when SRT increases. As such, kinetic selection affects more to the efficiency of sludge settling when SRT=5 days. For metabolic selection, it affects better to the efficiency of sludge settling when RPC closer to SRPC. As mentained above, RPC become closer to SRPC when SRT increases.
