Fifty-one fourth to sixth grade students whose CHD were cor- rected by surgery at least six months earlier and their parents participated in the study. Data was collected from: 1.the Health Status Rating Scale and Adjustment Scale for Elementary School Students completed by the children; 2.the Parental Over- protective Attitude Rating Scale and demographic data sheet completed by their parents; and 3.the children''''''''s medical records. The data obtained was statistically analysed by descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal- Wallis ANOVA, and stepwise regression analysis. The results showed that social adjustment was the one most affected by CHD among all the adjustment subscales listed in the scale, and neurosis and behavior immaturity appeared least affected. The total adjustment score was significantly associated with parental occupational level(χ2=14.89, p<.01). Children with restrictions of physical function in their daily lives and regular school attendance due to CHD had lower total adjustment score than those who without limitations. In addition, the adjustment subscale score was significantly correlated with grade level, parental overprotection, and age at repair of CHD. Children''''''''s adjustment could be predicted by "restriction of regular school attendance", "parental occupational level", and "parental educational level". The total variance was explained 38.7%. The findings provide a framework for better understanding of factors contributing to the increased risk of maladjustment for children with CHD and emphasize the importance of continuity of care for the children and their family.
