However, the provisions of Section 11.12.5 of ACI 318-89 are based on test results of low-strength concrete slabs with openings. In recent years, there is a trend to use high-strentgh concrete in construction, therefore it becomes necessary to examine the applicability of current ACI Code when applied to reinforced high-strength concrete slabs with openings. In this study, thirty specimens were tested . Variables included in this study are the concrete strength , the type of opening and the flexural reinforcement ratio. The test results of this study and results presented in previous studies indicate that for both low-strength and high- strength concrete slabs with openings, the punching shear strengths calculated using the provision of ACI 318-89 are overly conservative.
