Ever since its publication in 1768, this work created a burning sensation in the literary arena. Up to now, it still enjoys a large readership. With an elegant style, the author excels paticularly in her psychological analysis. The subtlety of her descriptions together with the delicacy of her style in "La Princesse de Cleves" contribute particularly to the creation of a new type of psychological novel. Adding her perspicacity to a brilliant imagination, in an atmosphere both concrete and abstract, real and dream-like, the author leads the reader into the affective and spiritual life of the princess. Between an introduction on the preciosity of the historical period and the conclusion of the love story, the different chapters of the present work analyse the following problems : Presentation and analysis of the protagonists; Study of the themes : love, marriage, bliss, ethics and etiquette; Description of reality hidden behind the facade of court-life; Research into fate; Analysis of symbolism; Psychological analysis.
