The 70% acetone extracts of fresh leaves were oral administrated to acute liver damage ICR mice induced by carbon tetrachloride. The levels of s-GOT and s-GPT were regarded as protective index. Camellia tenuifolia, one of the remarkable antihepatotoxic activity differ from control group (dosage : 100 μg/kg, decreased the levels of s-GOT to 4.6% , s-GPT to 0.9% ). Using bioassay as a guide, the water extract fraction was further separated by Diaion HP-20, TSK HW-40 columns. The active principle--camelliin A, a dimeric hydrolyzable tannin, was isolated and identified. The mechanism of liver protective activity was relative to lipid peroxidation. Based on the air-oxidation of linoleic acid, we found that camelliin. A showed strong anti- lipid peroxidation activity ( IC50 : camelliin A 3.40 mg/ml ). In the other method, lipid peroxidation induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide also was found the same result ( IC50 : 2.59 mg/ml ). The biological activities of camelliin A, inhibition of EBV DNA polymerase, were investigated in the paper. We also established a HPLC method for 15 kinds of Camellia genus plants.
