Though the enhancement of female employment and the features of discrimination are discussed prevalenty, research related to the service industry are relatively scarce. This thesis is thus designed to analyze the characteristics of Taiwan''s service industry. The intention is to explore the evolution of female employment in the industry from 1984 to 1994, and to detect the differences between sexes. The data utilzed in this thesis is the Manpower Utilization Survey of 1984 and 1994, which are conducted by the DGBAS. Mathods of frequency analysis, means analysis and the OLS are used. The major findings are the following: 1.There exisit significant diffferences between the income of male and female workers, no matter in the industrial or in the service sectors. Additionally, the coefficient of sex on income in the OLS is higher in 1994 than in 1984. 2.Although the proportion of female worked in the service industry increased (1994 relative to 1984), most female workers are still clerks, service workers, shop workers and market sales workers. Because most female workers'' wage are low in the service sector, the wage differentials between male and female has not improved, though the female workers become better educated. 3.The differences between male and female in the average of education level, age, and percentage of married are significant in the service sector, but the differences decreased from 1984 to 1994. Some suggesstions are proposed: the government should redirect their legislative effort in improving sexual discrimination in the workplace,enhance the female''s on-the-job training, upgrade the female''s professional skills and knowledge, help more female to obtain proper position, and provide comprehensive unemployment insurance. The enterprise should diminishthe extant prejudice against female. And the female themselves shoule be well-prepared for their job and work hard constantly.
