Forty-one dogs were examined. Dipylidium caninum, Toxocara canis, and Ancylostoma caninum were found in intestines. Dirofilaria immitis was found in heart and lung. The prevalence of each species were 59.60%, 17.07%, 14.63%, and 40.06%, respectively. The expression of maturation-associated protein in D. caninum were further studied. Adult D. caninum, collected from the intestines of stray dogs in Taiwan, were devided into three parts of proglottids according to the level of maturation, and homogenized to extract proteins. Extracts of proglottids were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. Some protein molecules displayed increasing intensity in maturation. The molecular weight of these proteins were 217, 198, and 41 kDa including their glyco- and lipo- parts, thus designated as maturation- associated proteins MAP-dip 217, MAP-dip 198, and MAP-dip 41 respectively. They were positive on Sudan black B and PAS staining and thus were considered as glyco-lipoproteins.These proteins were highly associated with the degreed of maturation of proglottids. Furthermore, only MAP-dip 41 was found abundantly in egg shell/ capsule fraction of cestode eggs.
