It in fact affects the pouring time、pouring temperature、filling rate of poured molten iron. This paper simulated the filling time and the temperature drop of filling iron. The effects of gating design on the filling time and temperature drop of molten iron was also included. Computer program to analyse the filling molten iron in a gating system bya commercial software-AutoCAD was developed. It was constructed by a solid model.Using AutoCAD Development System , this program obtained geometric data fromthe database of AutoCAD and calculated the loss-coefficient of a gating systemand temperature drop of filled molten iron. The text screen showed the simulated results of a gating system ,such as velocity of molten iron 、temperature ofmolten iron during mold filling associated with accumulated filling time. Finally,the program offered the optimized ingate dimension of a giving gatingsystem. Several conclusions had been reached as follows: A gating system1 with round shape of cross-sectional contour developed a maximum filling rate and minmum heat loss of filled molten iron.2 using a larger cross-sectional area as parting plane behaved a greater pressure head relatively.3 with a greater pressure head obtained a faster filling rate.4 using a higher pouring temperature and a greater cross section of ingate in unpressurized system would be suggested.The mold filling of a gating system could be simulated in a short time by using the developed software.
