The MII attempts to measure seven types of marital intimacy which are emotional intimacy, social intimacy, physical/non-sexual intimacy, spiritual intimacy, sexual intimacy, recreational intimacy and intellectual intimacy. The MII is a 42-item composed of three components: (1) the " prior standpoint " checklist measuring the prioritized sense of importance on various types of marital intimacy; (2) the " True Feeling " scale measuring one''''''''s own present perception of his/her marital intimacy, and (3) the " Ideal " scale measuring the anticipated marital intimacy. Results from a pilot study (N = 260) suggested that reliability of the MII is satisfactory. In the " True Feeling " scale, the Cronbach''''''''s alpha coefficient of the internal-consistency is .93 for whole scale; in subscales of marital intimacy types are between .72 and .89. Criterion-related evidence of validity coefficients are between .53 and .74. In the " Ideal " scale, the Cronbach''''''''s alpha coefficient is .96 for whole scale; reliability subscales of marital intimacy types are between .79 and .85. With a sample of 823 participants, various statistical procedures were performed to analyze the relationships between independent variables ( i.e. gender, age, years in marriage, numbers of children, educational background, average of the couple''''''''s income, socioeconomic status, parental marital status, family structure, religious belief, life experience ) and the MII scores. Significant findings of this study included: (1) Participants'''''''' preferred types of intimacy were emotional intimacy, intellectual intimacy, sexual intimacy, physical/non-sexual intimacy, recreational intimacy, and social intimacy respectively. As to spiritual intimacy, the extent of value is not apparent; (2) participants who had shorter years of marriage, no children, higher educational background, higher socioeconomic status scored higher on the True Feeling Scale and the Ideal Scale ; (3) participants who had Christian belief scored higher than those who had other religious believes on the emotional intimacy subscale, social intimacy subscale, spiritual intimacy subscale and intellectual intimacy subscale of the Ideal marital intimacy; and (4) positive correlations were found between positive married life experience and " True Feeling " as well as that and " Ideal " marital intimacy. The matrimony is better that would score higher on the " true feeling " and the " anticipated ideal " marital intimacy than the matrimony is poorer. Overall, based upon the conclusions, this study provided suggestions accordingly for the couples persuing higher marital intimacy, for the social counseling institutions to develop specific working with couples scheme, and for the counselors to use or investigate the marital intimacy inventory in the future.
