Before handling network performance issues, an accurate statistical characterization and modeling of VBR video source should be done at first. Some performance measures of a network carrying VBR video source traffic are under-estimated by traditional stochastic models due to their lack of long- range dependence to characterize VBR video sources. This thesis is a further study of two VBR video source models with sufficient long-range dependence proposed for MPEG coded video sources. Parameters of these models are modified and fitted according to a much closer inspection of the self-similarity of a practical sample VBR video source sequence. With the assistance of simulation, the long-range dependence of these two models has been verified, and their effect to the hypothetic queue in an ATM multiplexer is also observed. Our results also show that these modified models characterize the queueing behavior of a multimedia network more adequately. Afterward a diffusion approximation is applied to one of the proposed model to realize the tail distribution of the hypothetic queue with some well developed techniques in the literature.
